Leominster celebrated the unveiling of the Neddy Latimer House on October 16, 2023, naming the shelter after the longtime Executive Director of the Spanish American Center, Neddy Latimer. The new facility will provide essential support to individuals and families in need, embodying Latimer’s decades-long commitment to community service.
The naming ceremony attracted numerous attendees eager to honor Latimer, who has spent nearly four decades advocating for the underserved. Doug Bushman, Executive Director of the Fitchburg Housing Authority and CEO of Opportunities for Hope, emphasized the significance of the shelter, stating, “This is not just a building. It is a beacon of hope.” He credited Latimer’s unwavering dedication to inspiring the project, which has seen over $3 million invested to make the shelter a welcoming space.
Bushman acknowledged the collaborative efforts of several organizations, including the Spanish American Center, United Way, and Opportunities for Hope, which were instrumental in securing grants to launch the shelter project. He highlighted the challenges faced during the renovation, particularly in ensuring the house met safety codes.
Mayor Dean Mazzarella addressed the crowd, thanking Latimer for her tireless work and commitment to the community. “Neddy is really the story of us…let’s take this energy and let’s take the legacy of Neddy and move on,” he remarked, eliciting laughter with his light-hearted comment about the ease of saying “yes” to Latimer’s projects.
Bushman extended his gratitude to the United Way of North Central Massachusetts for their vital support, while Kory Eng, President and CEO of the United Way, commended Latimer’s leadership. “This program is about people regaining their dignity,” he stated, underscoring Latimer’s embodiment of community values.
During the ceremony, Bushman presented certificates to key individuals who contributed to the shelter’s success, including Ada Alvarado, Director of Operations at Opportunities for Hope. Alvarado described Latimer as a “beacon of hope, service, and compassion,” noting her profound impact on the community.
As the event concluded, Latimer expressed her deep appreciation, saying, “This place will become a beacon of hope. From the bottom of my heart…thank you for your contribution and commitment to the Neddy Latimer House.” Her emotional response was met with a standing ovation from attendees, who echoed their support with shouts of “We love you!”
The celebration continued with a toast led by Bushman, who recognized Latimer’s invaluable contributions. Father Julio Granados from the Holy Family of Nazareth Church concluded the event with a benediction, affirming the shelter as a space where hope is rekindled.
