The Neighborhood Nip Foundation successfully distributed approximately 5,000 turkeys to families in South Los Angeles during its inaugural turkey drive on November 21, 2023. This event marked the first public activation at the foundation’s Slauson Avenue parking lot, a location steeped in significance as it was once part of the late Nipsey Hussle‘s original Marathon Clothing property.
The turkey giveaway was a collaborative effort with the Think Watts Foundation. Attendees were greeted with a festive atmosphere as they received their holiday turkeys. Among those present was Charles Wright, who expressed his gratitude, saying, “We came to get turkeys and everything is wonderful.”
Community Impact and Symbolism
The Slauson Avenue site holds deep sentimental value for Samiel Asghedom, Hussle’s brother. He emphasized the importance of the location, stating, “This is where my brother first sold his mixtape. He ended up opening businesses in this parking lot and then buying the whole lot.” Asghedom noted that transforming this space into the Neighborhood Nip Foundation represents a commitment to enhancing the community.
“This is our first public event since the retail lot transformed into a community-centered hub for youth and families,” Asghedom explained. The foundation aims to provide educational resources and creative opportunities for students from elementary to high school. Plans include offering programs in academics and music, as well as access to studio facilities.
A Legacy of Giving
Nipsey Hussle, who was fatally shot outside his store on March 31, 2019, left behind a legacy of community empowerment and support. He was 33 years old at the time of his death and is survived by two children. The Neighborhood Nip Foundation is dedicated to continuing his vision by addressing the needs of the community he cherished.
Asghedom expressed his hopes for future events, stating, “I think any time we can come out and help throughout the year is the plan. It’s an honor to be able to activate and do something here.” The foundation’s initiatives are set to foster a sense of unity and support within the South Los Angeles community, ensuring that Hussle’s impact endures long after his passing.
