Northern Express Company Plans Office Move After Business Surge

The Great Northern Express Company has reported a significant increase in business in Grand Forks, nearly doubling its operations over the past year. This surge in demand has prompted the company to plan a relocation of its office by spring 1900 to enhance service and comfort for customers.

According to a report from the Grand Forks Herald dated November 24, 1899, the company’s receipts rose dramatically, with figures showing a jump from $4,718 in July 1898 to $7,168 in July 1899. This substantial increase reflects a healthy business environment in the area, showcasing the growing demand for express services.

The Grand Forks office has emerged as one of the top performers within the Great Northern system, particularly notable for a city of its size. Currently, the office operates with just two wagons, the same number used when business activity was significantly lower. Due to the increased volume, service has faced challenges, leading to plans for an additional wagon to be added in the spring. This change aims to ensure that the office can handle customer needs more effectively.

The company’s lease for its current location adjacent to the St. John’s block will expire in May 1900. As a result, the management is considering moving to a more advantageous site. While the exact location has not yet been finalized, discussions suggest that a building owned by Captain Powers, located next to Stanchfield’s clothing store on Third Street, could be a strong candidate. This new space may also incorporate a ticket and express office, further streamlining services for customers.

With the anticipated move, the Great Northern Express Company plans to install new fixtures and amenities in the office, aiming to create one of the finest facilities along the line. This upgrade is justified by the impressive business volume in Grand Forks, as the current office conditions, particularly during winter, are not ideal due to cold temperatures.

As the company prepares for these changes, the focus remains on continuing to provide high-quality service to an expanding customer base.
