A festive gathering in Washington, D.C., has set a new GUINNESS WORLD RECORDSTM title, with a remarkable 1,435 couples kissing simultaneously for five seconds under the National Mistletoe. This event took place on December 13, 2023, at Anthem Row, showcasing a stunning 10-foot installation of greenery, blooms, ribbons, and a jingle bell, all suspended 30 feet in the air. The achievement was verified and certified by representatives from GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS.
The previous record, held by Anheuser-Busch, featured only 480 couples at an event in St. Louis, Missouri, in 2019. The DowntownDC Business Improvement District organized the event, celebrating not just the record but also the spirit of community engagement in the heart of the city.
Gerren Price, President and CEO of DowntownDC, expressed pride in the accomplishment, stating, “Breaking a Guinness World Record title is an incredible moment for DowntownDC, but what’s even more meaningful is seeing our community gather and celebrate.” He emphasized that such events highlight the vibrancy and energy of the city.
The record-breaking kiss occurred at precisely 16:15, as part of a broader celebration featuring live music by the Ellington Carthan Quartet, art displays, photobooth opportunities, and food and drink offerings from local vendors including City Tap House and Root & Vine. The event was hosted by Sherrell Duncan from WPGC 95.5 and Rod Hendrix from 94.7 The Drive.
This year marked the second installation of the National Mistletoe at Anthem Row, a creation designed by multi-disciplinarian artist My Ly Design. The installation not only enhances the downtown corridor but also fosters an atmosphere of festive romance and joyful connections, making moments spent beneath it truly unforgettable.
The overwhelming participation in this event reflects a growing trend towards community-centric celebrations during the holiday season. As people come together to create shared memories, the sense of unity and joy resonates across the city.
The DowntownDC Business Improvement District continues to champion events that bring people together, reinforcing the importance of community ties and shared experiences in an ever-evolving urban landscape. The successful attempt at breaking the record underlines the district’s commitment to fostering a lively and inclusive environment for all.
