The Schuylkill County Historical Society has secured a Cultural and Historical Support Grant of $9,000 from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PHMC). This funding was announced by State Senator David G. Argall on March 15, 2024, highlighting the importance of preserving local heritage.
Senator Argall expressed his satisfaction regarding the grant approval, stating, “Preserving our past for future generations is critically important, and the Schuylkill County Historical Society does a wonderful job of doing that at its museum.” The society, located in downtown Pottsville, serves as a vital educational resource, showcasing priceless artifacts and offering a variety of programs and resources for the public.
The Schuylkill County Historical Society provides interactive tours, seminars, genealogical resources, special exhibits, events, and educational programs aimed at young people. This diverse range of offerings allows the community to engage deeply with their local history.
The announcement of the grant was made on behalf of several state representatives, including Tim Twardzik, Jamie Barton, JoAnne Stehr, and Dane Watro. Their support underscores the collective efforts to strengthen cultural institutions within the state.
In total, the PHMC recently approved $3.8 million in funding for 177 eligible museums and historical societies across 59 counties in Pennsylvania. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program aims to bolster the commonwealth’s museum community by facilitating the general operations of organizations that do not receive support from other state agency funding programs.
Such initiatives not only preserve local history but also foster a greater understanding of cultural heritage for future generations. The support from the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission is a testament to the value placed on historical societies and their role in education and community engagement.
