Tarrant County Celebrates Gladney Adoption Day with 24 New Families

On November 7, 2024, the Gladney Center for Adoption in Tarrant County celebrated a significant milestone by finalizing the adoptions of 24 children into 22 families. Associate Judge Lori DeAngelis presided over the event, her enthusiasm evident as she aimed to complete ten adoption cases before noon. “We’re going to do 10 adoptions before noon, I believe,” she remarked, bringing a sense of joy to what is usually a courtroom filled with more serious matters.

The Gladney Adoption Day event is particularly meaningful as it marks the culmination of a family’s adoption journey, coinciding with National Adoption Month observed in November each year. During the ceremony, Judge DeAngelis invited some of the newly adopted children and their siblings to the bench, allowing them to experience the ceremonial act of banging the gavel themselves. “I wish I could do this more often,” she expressed, highlighting the positive atmosphere of the occasion.

Addressing the Need for Adoption in Texas

The need for adoption in Texas remains significant, with approximately 4,000 children awaiting adoption as reported by the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services in fiscal 2024. Mark Melson, President and CEO of the Gladney Center, noted that many families are hesitant to consider adoption, but emphasized the organization’s commitment to providing ongoing support. “We have services we provide to families as they continue their journey,” he stated. “We have a lot of experience and data on what works and we share that with them.”

Despite broader trends in the adoption field, the Gladney Center has seen a slight increase in adoption numbers. Melson attributed this growth to their focused efforts in foster care and community outreach. “We’ve really put a lot of effort into the foster care piece here in Texas and looking at how we can grow that,” he added.

A Rich History and Wider Reach

The Gladney Center has a storied history dating back to 1887, initially gaining recognition for its services to unwed mothers in the 1920s. The organization was notably depicted in the Oscar-winning film “Blossoms in the Dust,” which tells the story of its namesake, Edna Gladney. In a significant development for the center, 2024 marked the year it partnered with an East Coast-based agency, expanding its services both nationally and internationally. “We’re now in 11 countries,” Melson confirmed, highlighting the center’s growth in resources and reach.

The annual adoption event not only finalizes legal proceedings but also fosters connections among families going through similar experiences. “This lets the families come out and play, meet each other and really celebrate,” said Melson, emphasizing the community aspect of the occasion.

As families left the Gladney Center with their new additions, the atmosphere was filled with joy and hope, reflecting the importance of these moments in the lives of both the children and their new parents. The Gladney Center continues to play a vital role in supporting families and addressing the pressing need for adoption in Texas.
