As the holiday season approaches, nonprofits in the Williamsburg area are stepping up efforts to assist families in need. With Christmas just weeks away, organizations are actively gathering food, toys, and essential items to support those facing hardships during this time.
The Williamsburg Health Foundation has made a significant contribution of $130,000 to help address the growing demand for assistance, particularly for food supplies. Deanna Van Hersh, president and CEO of the foundation, noted a troubling trend: community partners have reported a surge of over 30% in individuals seeking help. This increase reflects the ongoing challenges many families face in maintaining food security this fall.
Key Nonprofit Initiatives
Several local organizations are leading initiatives to ensure that vulnerable populations receive the support they need.
The Williamsburg Area Meals on Wheels is conducting its annual holiday fundraiser aimed at providing meals to seniors, veterans, and disabled adults. Executive Director Catherine Upton stressed the importance of this effort. “No one should have to choose between eating and staying healthy,” she stated. The fundraiser aims to alleviate financial burdens for seniors who often struggle to afford food and medication. Donations can be made online at williamsburgmealsonwheels.com or via mail to their P.O. Box.
At the Grove Christian Outreach Center, located at 8800 Pocahontas Trail, efforts to collect food donations are ongoing. Matt Pollino, the center’s nonprofit development manager, emphasized that the need for assistance does not end with the holiday season. The center is also hosting a toy drive for children, soliciting various toys suitable for different age groups. Donations can be made through the center’s Amazon holiday wish list or by visiting their website.
Continuing the Spirit of Giving
The Norge Dental Center has also contributed to the community by donating 270 items to FISH Inc. for Thanksgiving. They continue to accept nonperishable items for the Christmas season, with a donation bin available for after-hours drop-offs at their location on 7450 Richmond Road. FISH Inc. welcomes both food and monetary donations, as well as children’s pajamas and underwear, with collection hours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
Another noteworthy initiative is A Way Home, which began on December 1 and will run until January 1. Launched by York County Commonwealth’s Attorney Krystyn Reid, this program aims to support families dealing with housing instability and domestic violence. The initiative seeks new items such as blankets, hygiene products, and toys for children, with donations being accepted at the United Way office in Yorktown.
As the community rallies together, these organizations remind residents that every contribution, no matter how small, can make a significant impact this holiday season. For those interested in contributing or learning more about ongoing fundraising efforts, contacting the respective nonprofits is encouraged. Together, the Williamsburg area can ensure that everyone enjoys a more fulfilling holiday season.
