Greeley Initiates Search for New Public Works Director After Departure

The city of Greeley has commenced the search for a new public works director following the departure of Paul Trombino on December 1, 2023. Trombino, who had served in this role since 2021, previously held positions as the director and Homeland Security advisor for the state of Iowa. His leadership saw significant advancements in various city projects, including the Greeley-Weld County Airport improvement initiative and the Mobility Expansion for Regional Growth and Equity (MERGE) program.

During Trombino’s tenure, he led several infrastructure projects that have had lasting impacts on the community. His work on the Catalyst project is particularly noteworthy, as it is set to face a citywide vote concerning a zoning ordinance that was approved earlier this year. Brian McBroom, the Acting City Manager, expressed gratitude for Trombino’s contributions, stating, “Paul Trombino has been a tremendous asset to the city. We are grateful for his technical expertise and leadership of daily operations and the many infrastructure projects he championed.”

In addition to his significant projects, Trombino initiated plans for new stormwater improvements, which represent a substantial $500 million investment aimed at upgrading aging infrastructure. This initiative is intended to enhance the city’s capacity to manage storm events effectively. He was also instrumental in recruiting Alquist 3D, a 3D printing firm collaborating with the Greeley-Weld Habitat for Humanity on the Hope Springs project.

At the time of his departure, Trombino’s annual salary was $228,800, according to Kim Kappel, Greeley’s Public Information Officer. The city has not disclosed the reasons for his exit, citing it as a personnel matter and refraining from providing further details.

The job posting for the new public works director highlights the need for strong management skills to oversee ongoing city projects and secure necessary funding while facilitating communication across various departments. The anticipated salary range for this position is between $161,900 and $198,350, with a potential maximum salary of $234,800 based on the candidate’s experience. For context, the median income for Greeley residents is approximately $76,462, according to data from 2024 census reports.

Greeley aims to fill the public works director position promptly to ensure continuity in Trombino’s initiatives, with no plans for an interim director. Will Jones, currently the deputy public works director, has been appointed as the new public works director in Loveland, effective January 12, 2024.

Additionally, Greeley is in the process of selecting a new city manager following the resignation of Raymond Lee, who has been named the next city administrator for Portland, Oregon. As Greeley navigates these transitions, the city is focused on maintaining momentum in its critical development projects.
