He stated, “The goal is to prepare to seize city centers and hold them,” highlighting the significance of the protests that occurred on Friday.
While Pahlavi has been a prominent figure in the Iranian opposition from abroad, his popularity within Iran remains uncertain. He was only 16 years old when the 1979 Islamic Revolution resulted in the overthrow of his father’s 40-year reign. The internet blackout, now exceeding 36 hours according to the online watchdog NetBlocks, was implemented following mass demonstrations in Tehran. As of Saturday morning, NetBlocks reported, “metrics show the nationwide internet blackout remains in place, severely limiting Iranians’ ability to check on the safety of friends and loved ones.” The organization has been actively monitoring the situation and providing updates via their Telegram channel.
Protests began on December 28, 2023, as frustration over economic conditions boiled over. Citizens have expressed their anger towards the Iranian government and its security forces, which have responded with force.
