The amendment aims to remove existing laws regarding parental consent and safety standards for abortion procedures. Signed by Governor Abigail Spanberger on February 6, 2023, the “Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment” will appear on the ballot for the upcoming election on November 3, 2023.
Critics of the measure express concern that it does not impose any limitations on third-trimester abortions, which can involve viable fetuses. Pro-life organizations argue that the amendment, backed by the Democrat-controlled Virginia General Assembly, is misleading and undermines the oversight of abortion practices.
Concerns Over Safety and Parental Rights
The Family Foundation of Virginia is leading a coalition aimed at defeating the amendment. They warn that if the measure passes, it would eliminate crucial protections such as parental consent and reasonable safety standards for abortion procedures. Olivia Gans Turner, the director of the Virginia Society for Human Life, labeled the amendment as “extreme and reckless” and emphasized the need for public awareness regarding its potential implications.
“This amendment is designed to do one thing and one thing only: to provide abortion promoters with a place to operate without oversight of any kind,” Turner stated, urging voters to reject the proposal. She characterized the ballot question as “all smoke and mirrors” and encouraged citizens to educate themselves and vote against it in the fall.
A Call to Action
The stakes are high, according to John Stemberger, president of Liberty Counsel Action. “Virginia is going to be an enormous battle. There’s a lot of money involved… It’s close to Washington D.C. It’s a historic state,” he remarked. Stemberger pointed out that while Virginia has historically been a battleground state, the current situation presents a significant challenge. He urged voters in Virginia to be vigilant and vote against the reproductive freedom amendment.
Pro-life advocates are uniting to emphasize the importance of maintaining existing laws that protect parental rights and ensure medical accountability. Reports indicate that members of the General Assembly who voiced concerns during legislative debates were largely ignored by the majority. As the election date approaches, the focus remains on mobilizing voters to reject this amendment that many view as a threat to established protections.
