Alden Munson, Esteemed Engineer and Community Leader, Dies at 83

Alden Vincent Munson Jr., a long-time resident of Manhattan Beach and a respected figure in the engineering and intelligence community, passed away on August 29, 2025, due to complications following heart surgery. He was 83 years old. Munson’s extensive career spanned decades, impacting various sectors, particularly aerospace and national security.

Born on April 9, 1942, in Kingsburg, California, Alden was deeply rooted in his family’s heritage. His mother and grandfather were also born in Kingsburg. The family later moved to Springville, California, where they operated a logging and development business. Much of Alden’s childhood was spent in the mountains near Camp Nelson. His educational journey began at Mount Whitney High School in Visalia, where he excelled in both football and music, playing the trombone. He went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from San Jose State College, where he met his future wife, Jane Munson. Alden later completed his Master of Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and pursued further studies in computer science at the University of California, Los Angeles, alongside executive programs at Harvard and Stanford.

Alden began his professional career at The Aerospace Corporation in 1966. In 1973, he joined TRW, where he led several significant programs and eventually became Vice President of the System Development Division. His work at TRW established him as a pioneer in the field. Following his retirement in 1997, he took on senior leadership roles at Litton Industries, further solidifying his legacy.

In 2000, the National Reconnaissance Office recognized Alden as a Pioneer of National Reconnaissance for his innovative contributions to developing a fully automatic electronic intelligence system. His expertise continued to be valued after his retirement, as he served as Deputy Director for Acquisitions at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence from 2007 to 2010. In 2009, he received the prestigious National Intelligence Distinguished Service Medal for his exemplary service.

Alden was not just a professional; he was a vibrant individual with a passion for life. He engaged deeply with his interests, especially politics, and was known for his distinctive dry sense of humor. He enjoyed water-skiing on the Stockton Delta and was an avid snow skier, recently planning a heli-ski trip for the following year. His love for model trains saw him actively involved with the Los Angeles Model Railroad Society. Alden and Jane shared a love for travel, frequently visiting places like New York City and attending various musical theatre performances.

He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Jane Munson; daughter Kathryn (Katie) Bechtel and her husband, Greg; grandsons Max and Sam Bechtel; sister Marguerite (Pegi) Hover; and brother Charles Munson, all of Visalia, along with numerous cousins. Alden was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Kathryn Munson.

A Celebration of Life service is scheduled for Friday, November 7, at 12:00 p.m. at the Manhattan Beach Community Church, located at 303 S. Peck Ave., with a reception to follow. Alden Munson’s legacy as an engineer, mentor, and friend will be remembered fondly by all who knew him.
