Gary E. Kinnett, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and community leader, passed away on November 2, 2025, at the age of 91. His death marks the loss of a dedicated individual who significantly impacted the lives of those around him.

A Life of Service and Accomplishments

Born on June 24, 1934, in Los Angeles, Gary was the son of Donald Eugene and Florence Margaret (Taylor) Kinnett. He graduated from University High School before pursuing a degree at Occidental College, where he was an active member of the Alpha Tau Omega fraternity. After completing his education, Gary joined the United States Navy and attended Officer Candidate School in Newport, Rhode Island. Following his graduation, he served on active duty for three and a half years.

Although Gary had aspirations to attend law school initially, his passion for the Navy led him to join the Reserves, where he served for an additional 27 years, retiring with the rank of Captain. He continued his education at Boalt Hall Law School at the University of California, Berkeley, where he became a member of the Phi Delta Phi legal fraternity.

Family and Community Involvement

On December 21, 1959, Gary married Shirley Ann Campbell from Seattle, Washington. The couple built a life in Southern California, where Gary worked briefly for the California State Compensation Insurance Fund before joining the law firm Parker, Stanbury, McGee, Peckham, Babcock, and Combs. He quickly became a partner, demonstrating his commitment to the legal profession.

Gary was an active traveler, often combining his love for the Navy with family vacations. He and Shirley enjoyed skiing trips, visits to Seattle to see Shirley’s relatives, and holidays with their children, Julie and David. His commitment to community service was evident through his involvement with St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, where he served as an Elder, Deacon, and Stephen Minister. He also held the position of president of the Seaview Residents’ Association and was a former member of the Elks Lodge of San Pedro.

Furthermore, Gary contributed to the community as a Division Captain of the US Coast Guard Auxiliary and was a member of both the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club and the Portuguese Bend Beach Club. His extensive involvement in various organizations highlighted his dedication to service and leadership.

Gary is survived by his loving wife, Shirley, and their two children, Julie and David, along with David’s wife, Jennie, and their children, Tanner and Tristan. He leaves behind nieces Diana Nardi and Susan Campbell, as well as Diana’s children, Sarah and Sean, and their families. He was predeceased by his good friend and brother-in-law, Robert Campbell, just weeks before his passing.

A Celebration of Life service for Gary E. Kinnett will take place at 10:00 A.M. on December 19, 2025, at St. Peter’s by the Sea Presbyterian Church, located at 6410 Palos Verdes Drive South, Rancho Palos Verdes.
