Community Mourns Passing of Dedicated Educator Kathleen Giacalone

Kathleen Ann Giacalone, a beloved former educator, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 88. Born in San Pedro on April 24, 1937, she was the daughter of Vincent and Antoinette Vitalich. Kathleen spent most of her life in the local area, moving to Lomita with her husband, Rosario (Jack) Giacalone.

For 39 years, Kathleen dedicated herself to teaching at the elementary level, shaping the minds of countless children. Her passion for education was matched only by her love for travel, which she pursued enthusiastically during her retirement years. Kathleen’s legacy is reflected in the lives she touched as an educator and a community member.

Family and Community Contributions

Kathleen is survived by her husband, Jack, and her two children, daughter ToniLynn (Tomo) Meek and son Paul (Kelly) Giacalone. She is also remembered fondly by her four grandchildren: Tommy, Anthony, Jacquelyn, and Gianna, along with many nieces and nephews. Her family was the cornerstone of her life, and she cherished the time spent with them.

In recognition of her commitment to helping others, the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made in Kathleen’s name to several charitable organizations. These include Shriners Children’s, St. Jude’s Research Hospital, Disabled American Veterans, and the San Pedro Peninsula Cancer Guild. This request underscores her enduring spirit of giving and community support.

A Funeral Mass to honor Kathleen Giacalone will take place on December 2, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. The community is invited to join in celebrating her life and contributions to education and family.
