Timothy Patrick Scully, a respected educator and principal, passed away on December 13, 2023, at the age of 78. Surrounded by family, Scully leaves behind a legacy of dedication to teaching and community engagement. His remarkable career spanned 35 years, during which he served as the principal of North Torrance High School, earning the title of California Principal of the Year for the 2001-2002 academic year.
Throughout his tenure, Scully implemented innovative programs aimed at enhancing student and parent involvement. His initiatives included organizing parents’ nights, college recruiting sessions, and community leader meetings designed to foster dialogue between students and local figures. Additionally, he established a human relations commission and hosted diversity conventions to promote understanding among the student body.
Scully’s academic achievements culminated in a Doctor of Education from the University of Southern California in 2003, where he was recognized for his dissertation on education finance. His passion for education was matched by his love for sports, particularly as a lifelong fan of the L.A. Dodgers. He experienced great joy during the team’s back-to-back championship victories.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Scully battled multiple myeloma for 24 years. His experience motivated him to become an active fundraiser for City of Hope, contributing to efforts aimed at cancer research and patient care.
Scully is survived by his wife, Margaret, sons Sean and Jason, and grandchildren Timothy and Rose. A service celebrating his life will take place at Holy Cross Cemetery and Mortuary in Culver City on December 29, 2023, at 13:00. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to City of Hope in his memory.
