James Gordon Sheehy, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and Navy veteran, passed away peacefully on November 16, 2025, at the age of 84. Surrounded by family in Redondo Beach, California, Jim is remembered for his unwavering dedication to service, his contributions to aerospace engineering, and his adventurous spirit. He was born on March 9, 1941, in Windsor, New York, to parents James Edward Sheehy and Shirley Baldwin Sheehy.
Jim is survived by his wife of sixty years, Alexis, their children, James and Shannon, grandson Matthew, and brother Dennis. He was preceded in death by six siblings, highlighting the profound family connections he cherished throughout his life.
A Life of Service and Achievement
Jim served in the United States Navy from 1960 to 1966, achieving the rank of E-6 as a Fire Control Technician. His service included time aboard several ships, including the USS Lawrence, USS Chicago, USS Ramsey, USS Columbus, and USS Talbot. This experience fostered a lifelong commitment to discipline and pride in his service.
Following his military career, Jim embarked on an impressive journey as an aerospace engineer. He worked with notable organizations such as the Burroughs Corporation, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Honeywell, and Northrop. Jim played a crucial role in significant projects, including the Viking Mars spacecraft and the MX ICBM Missile programs. His reputation for technical expertise earned him respect within the industry.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Jim devoted sixteen years to Rotary International, embodying the organization’s commitment to service and community betterment. He was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous, celebrating 38 years of continuous sobriety in September 2025. His involvement in AA reflected his dedication to the principles of Recovery, Unity, and Service.
A Passion for Travel and Resilience
Jim’s zest for life extended beyond his professional pursuits. An avid traveler, he explored all seven continents, visiting 103 countries and more than 500 cities with his wife, Alexis. Their adventures together spoke to his curiosity and appreciation for diverse cultures.
In 2012, Jim faced a significant health challenge with a serious back condition. Rather than allow it to limit his experiences, he adapted by using a walker to continue his travels and remain engaged in daily activities. He later transitioned to a “sport walker,” which enabled him to complete the 2015 Los Angeles Marathon and five additional marathons, showcasing his determination and resilience.
Jim Sheehy leaves behind a legacy characterized by intelligence, perseverance, and a deep devotion to family and friends. His life was marked by meaningful connections, adventures, and a commitment to service that will be remembered and cherished by those who knew him. He lived fully, loved deeply, and his absence will be felt profoundly.
