Ohio State University Rises to 12th in National Research Rankings

The Ohio State University has achieved a significant milestone, ranking 12th among U.S. universities in total research expenditures, according to new data from the U.S. National Science Foundation. This remarkable ascent positions Ohio State ahead of renowned institutions such as Harvard, Duke, and Yale, underscoring the university’s growing influence in the research landscape.

In Fiscal Year 2025, Ohio State’s research enterprise reached a record $1.68 billion. This increase reflects a robust commitment to addressing complex societal challenges and highlights the trust placed in the university by various partners, including government, industry, and philanthropic stakeholders. John Horack, the university’s vice president for research, emphasized the importance of collaboration and hard work, noting that these values are integral to Ohio State’s success.

Industry Partnerships Fuel Research Growth

A particularly noteworthy aspect of this achievement is Ohio State’s rise in industry-sponsored research, where it now ranks 6th nationally, having secured nearly $175 million last year. This development signals a strong belief among companies in various sectors—from healthcare to advanced manufacturing—that Ohio State is a reliable center of innovation.

Horack pointed out that businesses do not invest without the expectation of a return, and the university consistently demonstrates the value of research investments. The partnership with Honda, for instance, focuses on developing next-generation battery technology, building on a successful 25-year collaboration that has produced transformative results. Additionally, the research conducted at Ohio State has been pivotal for companies like Koloma, which is pioneering breakthroughs in hydrogen clean fuel, and Voyager Technologies, which is advancing space research.

Commitment to Economic Development

Ohio State President Walter “Ted” Carter Jr. is actively promoting collaborations with industry leaders such as Anduril, Nationwide Insurance, and Amgen. These partnerships aim to drive business innovation and develop a skilled workforce that supports economic growth in Ohio. The university is committed to fostering relationships with economic development partners across the state, which is vital for sustaining momentum in research and innovation.

As the university celebrates its achievements, there is a strong sense of gratitude towards the faculty, staff, and students whose efforts contribute to this vibrant research environment. Ohio State’s research enterprise is not only thriving but accelerating, making a tangible impact on the economy and the communities it serves.

Horack concluded that the collaborative spirit and dedication to excellence at Ohio State are what will propel the university forward, ensuring its research continues to address pressing challenges and deliver meaningful outcomes for society.
