For instance, researchers can inquire about what specific visual data influenced a vehicle’s decision to brake suddenly or how time constraints might have affected its judgment.
Real-Time Feedback to Enhance Safety
The study illustrates the potential of real-time feedback to prevent accidents. Atakishiyev and his colleagues present a case study involving a manipulated speed limit sign. By adding a sticker that altered the appearance of a 35 miles per hour (approximately 56 kilometers per hour) sign, researchers tested a Tesla Model S. The vehicle misinterpreted the sign as indicating 85 mph (about 137 kph) and accelerated, demonstrating a critical flaw in its perceptual system.
In such scenarios, providing a rationale on the vehicle’s dashboard could empower passengers to intervene. For example, if the vehicle announces, “The speed limit is 85 mph, accelerating,” the passenger could take control before any potential violation occurs. Atakishiyev highlights the challenge of determining the appropriate level of information to relay. He notes that preferences for explanations can vary widely based on a passenger’s technical knowledge, cognitive abilities, and age, suggesting the need for customizable feedback mechanisms.
Analyzing Decision-Making for Safer Systems
Beyond immediate feedback, analyzing decision-making processes post-incident can lead to safer autonomous vehicles. The research team conducted simulations in which a deep learning model faced various driving scenarios. By posing challenging questions to the model, they identified situations where it struggled to explain its actions. This approach is pivotal for pinpointing weaknesses in the AI’s understanding and decision-making capabilities.
One specific method discussed is SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP), a technique for assessing the decisions made by autonomous vehicles. Following a drive, SHAP analysis evaluates the features influencing the vehicle’s choices, helping researchers determine which elements are crucial and which can be disregarded.
