Avon’s boys soccer team is set to make history as they prepare for their first-ever state championship match against the Kings Mills Kings on November 9, 2023, at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus. With a record of 16 wins, 2 losses, and 3 draws, the Eagles have displayed a remarkable performance throughout the postseason, conceding only two goals along the way.
The Eagles secured their place in the final with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Brecksville-Broadview Heights in overtime during the state semifinals. The match highlighted not only Avon’s offensive prowess but also the strength of their defense, which has been pivotal in their success this season. Sophomore Connor Britt, who scored the winning goal in the semifinal, remarked on the often-overlooked contributions of the defensive unit. “They definitely helped us out a lot because in the second half, Brecksville-Broadview Heights was having a lot of attacks, and the defense did a really good job doing the dirty work,” he stated.
The Eagles faced challenges during the semifinal, particularly in the second half when Brecksville-Broadview Heights capitalized on their wind advantage to score an equalizer late in regulation. Nevertheless, Avon’s defense maintained composure, ultimately leading to their overtime win.
Building a Cohesive Team
Avon Coach Chris Doré emphasized the importance of teamwork in achieving success. “The phrase, ‘defense wins championships,’ is said for a reason,” he noted. “A sign of a good team is when one unit is not doing what they need to be doing, another steps up to help us win big games.”
The Eagles’ defense has been particularly impressive, allowing only two goals since September 27. Senior Logan Fitchko highlighted the team’s unity, stating, “We’re just moving as one unit. In the last couple of games, we’ve really stepped it up a level. Everyone wants to work for each other.”
Goalkeeper Oliver Dobrovic has been a cornerstone of the team, with Doré considering the goalkeeper position crucial for any successful squad. “Especially in the later ends of the tournament, the pressure starts to get drastically more,” Dobrovic reflected. “But that’s what you sign up for when you’re a goalie because all of the pressure is on you.”
From his unique vantage point, Dobrovic noted the evolution of team chemistry throughout the season. “We are moving as a whole unit instead of just individuals. We’re focused on our end goal, which is winning a state championship,” he said.
Looking Ahead to the Final
Avon has already made history as the first team from Lorain County to reach a state championship match. As they prepare to face Kings Mills Kings, who hold a record of 15 wins, 2 losses, and 4 draws, the Eagles are determined to put forth a complete team effort.
Both teams have faced formidable opponents to reach this point. Avon’s postseason journey included decisive victories against Normandy (6-0), North Ridgeville (6-1), Walsh Jesuit (1-0), and Avon Lake (3-0), culminating in their dramatic win over Brecksville-Broadview Heights. Conversely, Kings Mills Kings triumphed over Trenton Edgewood (8-0), Troy (5-1), Harrison (2-0), Cincinnati Anderson (2-0), and Westerville Central (1-0).
Fitchko expressed his excitement for the final match, saying, “It’s amazing. Being on this team four years in a row, this is definitely the best team. It’s just the best opportunity I could ask for senior year. It’s a Cinderella story.”
As the Eagles prepare for their historic encounter at 1 p.m. on November 9, they carry not only the hopes of their community but also the belief that a well-rounded team can achieve greatness on the state stage.
