The Briarwood Christian Lions concluded their regular-season area play with an impressive undefeated record, defeating the Shelby County Wildcats 45-12 on January 22, 2024, followed by a commanding 63-44 victory over the Hueytown Golden Gophers the next day. This strong performance positions Briarwood well as they head into the Class 5A, Area 8 tournament.
Briarwood’s victory against Shelby County showcased their offensive prowess. The Lions surged ahead early, holding the Wildcats to just two points in the first quarter while scoring 13 themselves. Key players included Ann Tatum Baker, who contributed five points, along with baskets from Emma Kerley, Clara Crawford, and Grace Garrett. The team maintained momentum, extending their lead to 28-7 by halftime.
In the third quarter, Kerley and Crawford continued to shine, accounting for all nine of Briarwood’s points while keeping Shelby County at bay. The Lions led 37-10 going into the final quarter, allowing for additional scoring opportunities for players such as Claire Anderson and Julia Thompson. Kerley led the team with 15 points, while Crawford added 10, Baker scored eight, and Anderson contributed four.
The following night, Briarwood’s game against Hueytown began with a remarkable performance from Kerley, who went 7-for-7 from the free throw line in the first quarter. Kerley finished the game with 24 points, helping the Lions establish a 16-8 lead. The defense was equally impressive, limiting Hueytown to only eight points during the first half, resulting in a comfortable 35-16 lead at halftime.
Although Hueytown’s Natalla Matthews scored 16 points in the third quarter, Briarwood managed to maintain their lead. The Lions countered with solid contributions from Kerley and Crawford, ensuring they remained ahead by double digits at 49-34 heading into the final quarter. The Lions capped off the game with strong performances from Baker, Garrett, and Crawford, ultimately winning by 19 points.
With this victory, Briarwood improved their season record to 15-10, setting the stage for the final weeks of the regular season. The Lions are set to face the Homewood Patriots on January 26, 2024, at 18:00, as they aim to build on their recent successes.
