Chargers Bolster Coaching Staff with Eight New Additions

The Los Angeles Chargers have significantly enhanced their coaching staff by hiring eight new assistant coaches for Head Coach Jim Harbaugh. This announcement came on Friday, marking a strategic move to reshape the team’s performance as they prepare for the upcoming season.

Among the new hires, Butch Barry takes on the role of offensive line coach, stepping in for Mike Devlin, who was dismissed last month alongside offensive coordinator Greg Roman. Sean Spence joins as linebackers coach, replacing NaVorro Bowman, who resigned earlier this year. These changes reflect a concerted effort by the Chargers to revitalize their coaching approach and improve team dynamics.

In addition to Barry and Spence, the Chargers have brought on several other coaches. Julian Campenni will serve as assistant defensive line coach, while Rob Everett takes on the position of assistant offensive assistant. Adam Gase, known for his previous head coaching roles with the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets, joins as a passing game specialist. The team also welcomed Chandler Henry as tight ends coach, Denzel Martin as assistant outside linebackers coach, and Max McCaffrey as running backs coach.

Barry’s experience includes three seasons in the same role with the Miami Dolphins, where he worked closely with new Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel. Spence has spent the last three seasons coaching at Western Michigan, where he collaborated with new Chargers defensive coordinator Chris O’Leary in 2025.

Campenni joins after a two-year stint at Rutgers, while Everett previously worked with McDaniel in Miami for two seasons. Gase, returning to the NFL after his time with the Dolphins and Jets, adds valuable experience to the staff. Henry has a strong connection with McDaniel, having coached together for four seasons. Martin brings a wealth of experience, having spent a decade with the Pittsburgh Steelers, including the past three seasons as outside linebackers coach. McCaffrey, who was an offensive assistant under McDaniel, contributed to the Dolphins leading the NFL in net yards per game in 2023.

With these changes, the Chargers aim to create a more competitive environment that can better support star quarterback Justin Herbert and enhance their overall performance on the field. As the team gears up for what is anticipated to be a pivotal season, the integration of these new coaches symbolizes a commitment to achieving greater success in the NFL.
