Miami Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel remains resolute in his focus on team performance rather than his job security, following a disappointing 31-6 loss to the Cleveland Browns on October 22, 2023. The defeat marks a troubling start for the Dolphins, who now hold a record of 1-6, their worst since the 2021 season.
In his post-game remarks from Huntington Bank Stadium, a visibly disappointed McDaniel emphasized the importance of his role, stating, “I find it very offensive to all parties involved if I’m thinking about having the job — I need to be doing my job.” He reiterated his commitment to the organization, asserting that he will give everything to his role and that worrying about his job status would detract from the team’s efforts.
The game against the Browns highlighted a series of frustrations for Miami, as they committed 11 penalties for 103 yards, the highest since McDaniel took over as head coach in 2022. The Dolphins also turned over the ball four times, including three interceptions thrown by quarterback Tua Tagovailoa. McDaniel remarked, “I think [we] did everything to lose the game,” attributing part of the defeat to the players’ frustrations from the season spilling over into their performance.
As the Dolphins prepare for a critical Week 8 matchup against Atlanta, McDaniel hinted at potential changes in personnel. He stated, “If you are negatively affecting the football team routinely, I don’t have a choice but to assess a different player.” The coaching staff plans to evaluate all aspects of the team’s performance, including potential adjustments to their playing style.
Tagovailoa’s performance drew scrutiny, as he finished the game with 12-of-23 passing for 100 yards and three interceptions, resulting in a career-low passer rating of 24.1. He acknowledged that the offense struggled, with players misaligning after the huddle, which hindered their pre-snap process. Tied for the NFL lead with 10 interceptions this season, he is on pace to exceed his career high of 24 interceptions.
Reflecting on his performance, Tagovailoa said, “Definitely not happy, not proud of where I’m at with my play… I know I’ve got to be a lot better.” This season has proven challenging for the sixth-year quarterback, particularly after signing a lucrative four-year extension worth $212.1 million in the summer of 2024.
Despite the grim outlook, linebacker Bradley Chubb expressed optimism within the locker room, stating, “It’s going to be hard. But you have to welcome hard into your life in order to be where you want to be.” He emphasized the need for the team to look in the mirror and make necessary changes swiftly.
Historically, teams starting the season at 1-6 face a significant uphill battle, with only the Cincinnati Bengals in 1970 making the playoffs after such a start. As the Dolphins navigate this challenging season, McDaniel and his players remain focused on improving and finding ways to turn their fortunes around.
