Former Syracuse University quarterback Justin Lamson has successfully guided Montana State University (MSU) to the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) championship game. This pivotal match against Illinois State University is set for January 15, 2024, at 19:30 GMT and will be broadcast on ESPN.
Montana State head coach Brent Vigen has long recognized Lamson’s potential. Vigen tracked Lamson during his high school years, noting him as a key recruit while he was serving as quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator at the University of Wyoming. “Justin was a high target of ours,” Vigen stated, reflecting on his early assessment of Lamson’s abilities. He recalled a visit to Lamson’s high school in Sacramento, where he had the opportunity to observe the young athlete in action.
The Covid-19 pandemic affected many recruitment paths, including Lamson’s. Although he was interested in Wyoming, he ultimately chose to commit to Syracuse, where he spent a productive initial season. “I had a great time in Syracuse, learned a lot,” Lamson noted, emphasizing the value of his experience despite his later transfer.
In 2023, Lamson moved to Stanford University, where he played as a backup quarterback and contributed four touchdown passes in the following season. However, he soon entered the transfer portal again after a coaching shift at Stanford led to a new regime under head coach Eddie George at Bowling Green, complicating his position. Lamson described the transition as challenging, stating that it was difficult for him as a college quarterback when the coaching staff brought in their own recruits.
Lamson’s journey took another turn when he joined Montana State. He began to participate in spring drills shortly after arriving, and by the end of fall camp, he had secured the starting quarterback position. “I really felt like I had a challenging fall camp,” he reflected, acknowledging the tough competition from the MSU defense, known for its strength.
As the season progressed, Lamson’s performance improved significantly. He has thrown for 24 touchdowns and only three interceptions, alongside 14 rushing touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the most efficient quarterbacks in the FCS. His contributions have been integral to the Bobcats’ impressive record of 13-2 this season.
Coach Vigen expressed his gratitude for Lamson’s journey, stating, “It was the way the story was meant to be written.” He appreciated the relationship that has developed over the years, noting the unique circumstances that have led to Lamson thriving within the Bobcats’ offensive system.
The upcoming championship game marks a significant milestone for both Lamson and Montana State, showcasing the culmination of a remarkable athletic journey that has seen him adapt and excel across different programs. As kickoff approaches, excitement builds for what promises to be a thrilling showdown in the pursuit of the FCS title.
