Liverpool Chairman Admits Willingness to Let Stars Leave Free

Liverpool FC’s chairman, Tom Werner, disclosed that the club was prepared to let key players Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk depart on free transfers if their contract demands had been excessive. Both players signed new two-year agreements in April 2023, just months before their previous contracts were set to expire. Werner’s comments highlight the club’s strategic approach to contract negotiations, particularly during a season that saw Salah express concerns about his future at the club.

In a recent interview, Werner emphasized the importance of patience in the negotiations, crediting Richard Hughes, the director of football, for his respectful and methodical handling of the situation. According to Werner, he frequently communicated with Hughes regarding the contract discussions. He noted, “I’d call him frequently and say, ‘Richard, how are things going with Mo Salah and his contract?’ and he would say, ‘Tom, it will all be good in the end’.”

The negotiations extended over several months, with the club’s leadership indicating a willingness to walk away if the financial expectations became untenable. Werner stated, “If Richard had called and said, ‘The chasm is too big’, I would have respected that too.” This approach reflects a broader commitment within the club to empower its leadership while maintaining a supportive oversight.

Commitment to Strategic Growth

Werner also highlighted the role of Michael Edwards, the CEO of Football at Fenway Sports Group, describing him as “probably the preeminent father of success” at Liverpool. Edwards, who previously served as director of football, returned in a new capacity last year, despite receiving numerous offers from other clubs. Werner confirmed that FSG is actively looking to expand its portfolio, with the acquisition of additional clubs, such as Bordeaux and Malaga, on the agenda. He mentioned, “Key for Michael was our commitment to purchasing a second club. That’s very much still the plan.”

The chairman expressed enthusiasm for Liverpool’s future under the management of Arne Slot, who was the club’s first choice to succeed Jurgen Klopp. Slot’s inaugural season has been remarkable, culminating in a Premier League title victory. Werner praised Slot for his authenticity, noting, “He’s not trying to be Jurgen Klopp, he’s not trying to be Pep Guardiola. He’s his own man, and he’s quite brilliant in all the things that he does.”

The developments surrounding Salah and Van Dijk’s contracts, along with the strategic vision articulated by Werner and his team, reflect Liverpool’s commitment to retaining top talent while fostering an environment of growth and success. With the club’s leadership firmly in place and a clear plan for expansion, the future looks promising for Liverpool FC as they aim to build on their recent achievements.
