Moyes Confirms Grealish Injury, Everton Eyes Transfer Options

Everton manager David Moyes has announced that midfielder Jack Grealish is facing a significant injury setback after suffering a stress fracture in his foot. This news has intensified discussions within the club regarding potential transfer signings before the window closes. Grealish played the full match in Everton’s recent 1-0 victory against his former team, Aston Villa, but a subsequent statement revealed that he would be consulting a specialist for further evaluation.

Reports from The Athletic confirmed that Grealish’s injury could sideline him for several months, raising concerns about the squad’s already strained depth. Everton is currently grappling with a series of injuries and suspensions, compounded by the recent Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). The loss of Grealish is particularly disheartening as his strong performances had reignited calls for his inclusion in the England squad ahead of the upcoming summer World Cup.

Everton is reportedly covering approximately three-quarters of Grealish’s substantial weekly salary of £300,000 from Manchester City. As the club navigates the transfer market, they are considering the addition of a winger alongside their ongoing search for a new striker and right-back. Moyes acknowledged the impact of Grealish’s absence, stating, “It’s a big blow because he’s been hugely important to us.”

Transfer Considerations and Team Updates

Moyes indicated that the club is in close communication with Manchester City regarding Grealish’s condition, noting, “We’ll see how that works as we go along, and as we get more decisions from the specialists.” He emphasized that the injury will certainly influence Everton’s transfer strategy, saying, “It’ll add to our thinking in the window, that’s for sure.”

In brighter news for Everton, midfielders Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Carlos Alcaraz have returned to training after their own injury lay-offs. Additionally, defender Jarrad Branthwaite, who has yet to feature this season, has also resumed training, edging closer to his return to match fitness.

Meanwhile, key players Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gueye have returned to the club’s Finch Farm training ground after celebrating their AFCON victory with Senegal. Both will be evaluated ahead of Everton’s upcoming match against Leeds United on March 4, 2024.

Despite these encouraging developments, Everton must contend with the absence of midfielder Tim Iroegbunam due to a groin injury. Defender Michael Keane is also set to miss the match as he completes a three-match ban for a disciplinary infraction.

Moyes is currently deliberating whether to send young midfielder Harrison Armstrong back to Championship side Preston North End. Armstrong, who impressed with his performance against Aston Villa, is a player Moyes is keen to retain if necessary. “He had his best game for us at Aston Villa,” Moyes remarked, praising the 19-year-old’s contributions. “If I can’t and I need him here, I’ll more than do that.”

As Everton navigates this challenging period, the club’s ability to adapt to Grealish’s injury and make strategic decisions in the transfer market will be crucial for their season’s success.
