Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has once again stirred conversation among NFL fans, this time with his unconventional choice of condiment for Thanksgiving turkey. Known for his fondness for ketchup, Mahomes has previously admitted to enjoying sandwiches made solely with the condiment. As the Chiefs prepare to face the Dallas Cowboys on November 23, 2023, at AT&T Stadium, his culinary preferences have taken center stage.
The matchup is particularly significant as the Cowboys come off a thrilling win against the Philadelphia Eagles, keeping their playoff hopes alive with a record of 5-5-1. In contrast, the Chiefs enter the game with a 6-5 record, following a challenging season for Mahomes and his team. While families across the United States gather for their Thanksgiving meals, Mahomes aims to shine on the field.
In a recent advertisement for Adidas, Mahomes shared his thoughts on Thanksgiving. Sitting in front of a turkey, he stated, “Thanksgiving is a time to give thanks. Return home. See family, and meet new friends.” However, the commercial took an unexpected turn when Mahomes proceeded to slather a turkey leg in ketchup, leaving many viewers perplexed.
“Thanksgiving is a time to eat,” he continued, but his condiment choice drew mixed reactions online. One fan expressed their disapproval on social media platform X, commenting, “Just when I was starting to forgive him.” Another chimed in with, “Cowboys by 10,” suggesting that Mahomes’ culinary choices may reflect on his team’s performance. Others shared their disbelief, with one user stating, “This is just wrong.”
Mahomes, who co-owns a steakhouse with teammate Travis Kelce, also revealed his penchant for ketchup on steak. In a previous interview with Barstool Sports, he recounted his youth, saying, “When I was younger, I used to eat ketchup sandwiches, just bread and ketchup. That is disgusting.” Reflecting on his childhood habit, he added, “Maybe that’s why I can throw it [a football] far.”
Although Mahomes has moved away from ketchup sandwiches, he still enjoys the condiment with mac and cheese and steak. He shared that even in upscale restaurants, his request for ketchup often raises eyebrows among chefs. “I’ve definitely been at a few nice restaurants where I’ve got the steak and asked for ketchup, and the chef comes down and asks like, ‘What’s wrong?'” he explained.
As the Thanksgiving game approaches, Mahomes’ love for ketchup remains a talking point, showcasing how personal preferences can captivate fans beyond the field. Whether his culinary choices will influence the game remains to be seen, but they certainly add a unique flavor to the Thanksgiving festivities.
