Ravens Outline Offseason Plans Amid Jackson’s Contract Uncertainty

At the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Baltimore Ravens general manager Eric DeCosta and first-year head coach Jesse Minter discussed the team’s offseason priorities, including the future of quarterback Lamar Jackson and potential roster improvements. As the Ravens look to build a competitive team for the upcoming season, several key decisions lie ahead.

Jackson’s Contract Impacts Team Strategy

Jackson’s contract negotiations remain a focal point for Baltimore. The two-time NFL Most Valuable Player is projected to have a staggering $74.5 million salary cap hit in 2026, making it a critical issue in the Ravens’ roster planning. Ravens owner Steve Bisciotti has expressed his desire for Jackson to remain with the team, emphasizing the urgency of finalizing a deal before free agency begins on March 9, 2024.

“We want another window, and Lamar knows that,” said Bisciotti. “I don’t want to go into free agency with that hanging over our head.”

Despite the looming cap hit, DeCosta downplayed concerns about Jackson’s contract hindering the team’s ability to make impactful moves. He indicated that discussions with Jackson have been ongoing and productive. “I have spoken to Lamar about a lot of different things over the last month,” DeCosta stated, highlighting Jackson’s engagement in the process.

Prioritizing Key Contracts and Enhancing the Roster

In addition to Jackson, the Ravens are focused on securing center Tyler Linderbaum long-term. DeCosta confirmed that Baltimore has made a “market-setting offer” to Linderbaum, who is seen as a vital component of the offensive line. “Tyler is a guy that I have tremendous respect for,” DeCosta remarked, underscoring the team’s commitment to retaining this promising player.

As a first-round draft pick in 2022, Linderbaum has quickly established himself as one of the league’s top interior offensive linemen. Minter echoed DeCosta’s sentiments, calling Linderbaum “a major piece of our offense.” The Ravens are not expected to use the franchise or transition tag on him, which could open avenues for other teams to pursue his services.

Improving the pass rush is another priority for Baltimore. The team finished the 2025 season with the third-fewest sacks in the league, and DeCosta openly acknowledged the need for improvement. “We certainly know that we have to augment the pass rush and improve there,” he said, pointing to the absence of defensive tackle Nnamdi Madubuike due to injury as a significant factor.

Looking ahead, the Ravens hold 11 draft picks, providing them with substantial flexibility to enhance their defensive front. This year’s draft class is noted for its depth in pass rush talent, and Minter’s defensive expertise will be crucial during this process. “We like this draft class in terms of pass rush, edge ability and the ability to get up the field and impact the passing game,” DeCosta affirmed.

Long-Term Planning and Defensive Philosophy

The Ravens have built a reputation for discipline and long-term planning, which DeCosta emphasized when discussing the team’s draft strategy. “We’re going to rank every single player using analysis, analytics, scouts, interviews, and things like that,” DeCosta explained. This meticulous approach aims to ensure that the Ravens select the best players available while addressing immediate needs.

Minter’s defensive philosophy also prioritizes versatility, particularly within the secondary. The Ravens have one of the league’s standout defensive players in safety Kyle Hamilton, who has been described as a “unicorn” due to his unique abilities. However, the secondary’s overall performance needs improvement, as the Ravens allowed the second-most passing yards in the league last season.

Minter has indicated that he intends to maximize personnel usage, drawing from successful strategies employed by other teams. “In today’s league, it’s about flexibility and matchup adaptability,” he noted, emphasizing the need to develop a robust defensive strategy moving forward.

As the Ravens navigate the offseason, the decisions made in the coming weeks will significantly impact their chances for success in the next NFL season. With key contracts on the line and an eye on enhancing the roster, Baltimore’s leadership is poised to make strategic moves that align with their long-term vision.
