SF Giants Unveil Coaching Staff Under New Manager Tony Vitello

The San Francisco Giants officially announced the coaching staff for their new manager, Tony Vitello, on Friday morning. This announcement comes just ahead of the team’s spring training, which is set to commence next week. While the names on Vitello’s staff had been anticipated for some time, the formal unveiling marks an important step as the Giants prepare for the upcoming season.

During the December MLB Winter Meetings in Orlando, Vitello’s staff had the opportunity to connect in person, fostering a collaborative environment. Vitello emphasized the importance of addressing all aspects of player development, stating, “Covering up any blind spots so that whatever area it might be… it’s available.” He aims to create a coaching group that embodies the energy and vision he has for the organization, noting, “This coaching staff is this year’s coaching staff.”

Among the key appointments, Jayce Tingler will serve as Vitello’s bench coach. Tingler previously managed the San Diego Padres and has a history with Vitello dating back to their time as teammates at the University of Missouri. Tingler’s recent role as the bench coach for the Minnesota Twins will bring valuable experience to the Giants’ dugout.

In a significant addition, Ron Washington will take on the role of major-league infield coach. Washington has an extensive managerial background, having led both the Texas Rangers and the Los Angeles Angels. His expertise will be particularly beneficial for new acquisition Luis Arraez, who has faced challenges defensively in his career. Vitello noted Washington’s exceptional coaching ability, stating, “His ability to coach infielders… is great value.”

The Giants have also appointed Hunter Mense as the new hitting coach, succeeding Pat Burrell. Mense, who played under Vitello at Missouri, comes from the Toronto Blue Jays’ coaching staff and will be tasked with improving an offense that ranked 17th in runs scored and 22nd in on-base plus slugging percentage last season.

On the pitching side, Justin Meccage will replace J.P. Martinez as the pitching coach. Meccage previously worked with Milwaukee’s Triple-A affiliate, where he contributed to the team achieving the best earned run average (ERA) in the National League last season. Longtime major-league reliever Jesse Chavez will step in as the bullpen coach, while Frank Anderson, Vitello’s former pitching coach at Tennessee, becomes the director of major-league pitching.

The coaching staff also includes Shane Robinson and Hector Borg as first-base and third-base coaches, respectively. Returning members from last year’s staff include Oscar Bernard, Taira Uematsu, Alex Burg, and Eliezer Zambrano.

As the Giants gear up for the upcoming season, they will also send eight players from their major-league roster to participate in the World Baseball Classic in March 2024. Among those selected are Logan Webb (USA), Tristan Beck (Great Britain), Heliot Ramos (Puerto Rico), and Harrison Bader (Israel). Minor-league infielder Dayson Croes will represent the Netherlands.

On the coaching front for the World Baseball Classic, Dusty Baker will manage Nicaragua, while Ron Wotus and Dave Righetti will serve as bench and pitching coaches, respectively, for Italy. The Giants are looking to build momentum as they enter spring training with a fresh and dynamic coaching staff, focused on achieving success in the upcoming season.
