South Glens Falls Claims Victory Over Troy in Playoff Opener

South Glens Falls High School advanced in the Class AA Section II playoffs after defeating Troy High School 1-0 in a tightly contested first-round match on October 18, 2023. The game, held in South Glens Falls, New York, was marked by a strong defensive effort from both teams throughout the first half, resulting in a scoreless halftime.

Bulldogs head coach Stephen Philo praised his team’s defensive performance, noting, “(We) didn’t give up any corners, and were able to just suffocate any offensive pressure they had.” The second half saw a shift in momentum as South Glens Falls took control offensively, ultimately leading to the decisive goal.

In the 55th minute, junior midfielder Emeri Buckley capitalized on a chaotic moment in the opposing box. After a well-placed cross, the ball ricocheted among players before landing at Buckley’s feet. With an open net in front of her, Buckley calmly slotted the ball home, securing the lead for her team.

“I feel like we worked really well together,” Buckley said regarding the play that led to her goal. “It definitely wasn’t just me there. We did a really good job with our crossing and team spirit was high.”

Coach Philo expressed confidence in Buckley’s abilities, stating, “She’s the first team all-star player for a reason. She showed how valuable she is tonight, both in the offensive and defensive end.” Buckley’s performance not only showcased her skills but also reinforced the importance of teamwork in achieving success on the field.

After taking the lead, South Glens Falls maintained their composure. The midfield and back line effectively shut down Troy’s attempts to equalize, with standout performances from players like Gianna Marissal, Jaielynn Curley, Emilia Osakowicz, and goalkeeper Emmalee Sheeran. “We just limited any chances they had in transition,” Philo remarked, emphasizing the team’s strategic execution.

Looking ahead, South Glens Falls, seeded No. 8, will face a significant challenge as they prepare to compete against the No. 1 seed, Mohonasen, in the next round. The match is scheduled for October 20, 2023, at 16:30. Philo acknowledges the tough road ahead, stating, “That’s gonna be a different beast. They’re undefeated for a reason. They’re a very talented team, and we’re going to go down there and put our best foot forward and see what happens.”

The victory over Troy not only propels South Glens Falls into the next stage of the playoffs but also serves as a testament to the team’s resilience and determination. As they prepare for the upcoming match, the Bulldogs are focused on building on their recent success and showcasing their capabilities against a formidable opponent.
