PITTSBURGH — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin expressed optimism on Tuesday regarding the availability of wide receiver DK Metcalf for the upcoming game against the Miami Dolphins. Metcalf’s health was called into question following his hospital visit and overnight stay in Baltimore after the Steelers’ recent victory on Sunday.
During his weekly news conference, Tomlin stated, “He’s moving in the right direction. I don’t think it’s going to jeopardize his availability at all.” However, he acknowledged that Metcalf might miss early week practices due to the incident. “Thankfully he’s fine. I’m appreciative of our medical staff and how quickly they acted to ensure his safety and care postgame.”
Metcalf delivered a standout performance on Sunday, recording a season-high of 148 yards on seven receptions in the Steelers’ 27-22 win. Following the game, he reported stomach pains and was subsequently removed from the team flight by medical personnel, leading to an overnight stay at a local hospital. He returned to Pittsburgh on Monday.
Tomlin explained, “He got hit in the abdomen or stomach in-game. They gave him some basic over-the-counter remedies like Pepto or something, and it got progressively worse after the game.” He praised the medical team for exercising caution, ensuring Metcalf was stable before traveling.
Injury Concerns for Key Players
While Metcalf appears likely to play against a Dolphins defense that has allowed just 13.3 points per game over their last four victories, the status of several other key players remains uncertain. Three Steelers—tight end Darnell Washington, offensive tackle Andrus Peat, and linebacker Malik Harrison—are currently in the concussion protocol. Additionally, cornerback James Pierre (calf) and defensive lineman Keeanu Benton (ankle) may be limited in practice due to injuries sustained during the game.
Tomlin also mentioned that safety Kyle Dugger (hand) has “a chance” to participate after missing the previous game. The availability of first-round draft pick Derrick Harmon (knee), who has not played in the last two games, is also uncertain. Tomlin stated that Harmon’s participation in practice will determine his status for the game.
As injuries continue to accumulate, Tomlin opted to give the Steelers, who hold a 7-6 record, an off day on Wednesday. The team will resume practice on Thursday with a normal schedule. “We just deemed it appropriate to give ourselves an additional 24 hours of recovery this week,” Tomlin explained. “This will allow guys some extra time to rest and recuperate.”
With the Steelers preparing to host the Dolphins for a pivotal matchup on Monday Night Football, Tomlin’s management of player health will be crucial as the team aims to secure a spot in the postseason.
