Warriors Announce Steph Curry Will Miss Game Due to Knee Injury

The Golden State Warriors have confirmed that star player Steph Curry will miss their upcoming game against the Philadelphia 76ers due to a knee injury. This decision follows the diagnosis of patellofemoral pain syndrome over the weekend, commonly referred to as “runner’s knee.” The only effective treatment for this condition is rest, which Curry will be undergoing.

Warriors coach Steve Kerr addressed the situation following Monday’s practice, stating, “(When he returns) will totally be up to team doctor Rick Celebrini and Steph. As soon as Rick tells me he can play, he’ll play, but they’re working together every day.”

Curry sustained the injury during the game against the Detroit Pistons on March 15, 2024, leaving midway through the third quarter. With the NBA All-Star Game approaching in two weeks, his participation in this exhibition is also uncertain. Kerr did not provide details on whether there have been discussions regarding Curry’s status for that event.

After facing the 76ers, the Warriors will head to Phoenix to take on the Suns on March 17, followed by a game against the Los Angeles Lakers in Los Angeles on March 19.

In addition to Curry, Jonathan Kuminga is also sidelined, missing his fifth consecutive game due to knee soreness. Kerr noted, “He got some on-court work in before practice, but the injury’s at a point where he’s not yet ready to go live.”

The Warriors are also navigating the absence of Jimmy Butler, who recently tore his ACL. Kerr mentioned he has been in touch with Butler but refrained from sharing specifics about the timeline for Butler’s surgery. Warriors public relations director Raymond Ridder later indicated that Butler’s agent, Bernie Lee, will inform the team when Butler is ready to disclose details regarding the procedure.

On a positive note, De’Anthony Melton has stepped up in Butler’s absence. Since January, he has averaged 14.5 points per game, along with 2.2 assists, showcasing a 56.9% effective field goal percentage. His ability to create offensive pressure has been crucial for the Warriors, especially given their current roster challenges.

Melton’s performance is particularly impressive considering he is recovering from ACL rehab and has been limited to a maximum of 25 minutes per game since late December. Kerr expressed optimism about increasing Melton’s playing time, saying, “I talked to Rick about that the other day, and he said that’s something we can aim for, but not yet. A two-year absence means a very slow ramp up for that.”

As the Warriors prepare for their upcoming games, the focus will be on managing injuries and ensuring that key players can return to full strength as they aim for a successful finish to the season.
