130th Airlift Wing Returns Home After Successful Africa Mission

BREAKING: The 130th Airlift Wing has just returned to McLaughlin Air Base in Charleston, W.Va., after a crucial mission in the Horn of Africa. Families and supporters gathered on the tarmac, eagerly awaiting the arrival of their loved ones who had been deployed since December 2023.

As the first of several C-130J-30 aircraft rolled onto the apron, excitement filled the air. Young children, wearing ear protection, craned their necks to catch a glimpse of their fathers. “There’s nothing like it, it makes their day, it makes our day,” said Captain Mike Adler of the 130th Airlift Wing. “It’s been a long time. Happy to be home and it’s time to make up for some lost time for sure.”

The mission involved delivering vital supplies across various airfields in the Horn of Africa. “We flew into different airfields delivering supplies,” explained Airman Thomas Staggs, who was reunited with his young son, Sawyer. “I missed his first Christmas, but we planned one out and did it early before I left.”

Fellow airman Ben Foster echoed similar sentiments, holding his son who had been just two months old when he deployed. “It’s great, he’s grown up a lot since I left him. He’s like 20 pounds heavier,” said Foster with a smile.

This marks a significant milestone for the 130th Airlift Wing, as it was the unit’s first operational deployment using the advanced C-130J-30s, an upgrade from their previous C-130H3 models introduced in 2021.

Officials confirm that the mission was a success, underscoring the dedication and resilience of the Air Guard members. With the holidays approaching, these reunions hold even more significance for families as they celebrate together after months apart.

The public is encouraged to share the joyous homecoming of the 130th Airlift Wing, highlighting the human impact of their service. Stay tuned for more updates as these brave individuals settle back into their routines and reconnect with their families.
