UPDATE: The CalFresh Fruit and Vegetable EBT Pilot Project is officially back, fueled by a significant $36 million boost in state funding. This urgent initiative aims to support families in Los Angeles by making fresh produce more affordable, especially in the wake of recent economic challenges.
Effective immediately, CalFresh recipients can receive rebates on their EBT cards when they purchase fresh fruits and vegetables at participating locations. This program allows for up to $60 a month in rebates, making it easier for families to access nutritious food. The renewed funding is expected to keep the program running for approximately 10 months, significantly extending its previous duration of just three months with the last $10 million funding.
The announcement comes after food banks and meal programs faced a surge in demand during the longest government shutdown in U.S. history, highlighting the urgent need for accessible food options.
“You know, people are hurting,”
said State Senator Laura Richardson, who represents the areas of Carson and Compton.
“The number one thing that we hear that people are concerned about is affordability.”
Currently, there are about 90 participating retailers and farmers markets in the Los Angeles area. This surge in funding not only enhances food security but also addresses the pressing issue of affordability for many families struggling to make ends meet.
Residents are encouraged to check for participating locations to take full advantage of this revitalized program. The support from state officials emphasizes the importance of ensuring access to healthy food, particularly in underserved communities.
As the situation develops, stakeholders and community leaders are optimistic about the lasting impact of the CalFresh program on public health and nutrition in Los Angeles. This initiative signals a commitment to alleviating food insecurity and promoting healthier eating habits among those who need it most.
Stay tuned for more updates as this essential program rolls out across the city.
