UPDATE: The Athens Town Board has just announced a six-month moratorium on the development of data storage centers, a decision made during a meeting on October 23, 2023. This urgent measure aims to provide officials with the necessary time to establish comprehensive regulations for these facilities, which have raised significant environmental and safety concerns among residents.
During the meeting, the moratorium was passed unanimously following a public hearing where only one resident, Sarah Steimel from Sleepy Hollow, voiced her support. “I encourage caution with the development of data centers,” Steimel stated. Her concerns focus on the energy consumption and cooling practices of data centers, as well as the potential release of particulate matter 2.5, which poses serious health risks.
Steimel emphasized, “A lot of what’s happening with these data centers is not just the electrical consumption… They require backup generators that are run on diesel.” The Environmental Protection Agency identifies PM 2.5 as harmful when inhaled, raising alarms for community health.
Town Supervisor Michael Pirrone echoed these concerns, highlighting the risks not only to residents but also to first responders. “There are environmental concerns, and safety concerns,” Pirrone noted. He stressed the need for the Board to collaborate with the Planning Board and Zoning Board of Appeals to draft effective regulations.
Pirrone also mentioned that there are currently no data storage centers proposed for the town. “There are rumors, but no concrete evidence,” he clarified. “No one has contacted me or the code enforcement officer regarding these facilities.” This proactive approach aims to ensure that regulations are in place before any development occurs.
The moratorium allows time for the town to consider potential limitations on land size, structure size, and power requirements for future facilities. Pirrone stated, “We are trying to be ahead of the game and have all our bases covered,” reflecting a commitment to community safety and environmental integrity.
