Authors Censored on ‘Book Banning’ Tour, Walk Out of School Event

UPDATE: Authors Joanna Ho and Caroline Kusin-Pritchard abruptly left Country Club Elementary School in California just minutes before their scheduled presentation on October 17, 2023. The authors were asked by the San Ramon Valley Unified School District to refrain from discussing themes of book banning during their event, a request they found unacceptable.

The authors were promoting their book, “The Day the Books Disappeared,” which addresses critical themes surrounding book censorship. Upon arrival, the principal expressed concerns that certain discussion points, particularly about book banning, were not suitable for students aged 4 to 9, leading to a deeply contentious situation.

Caroline Kusin-Pritchard asserted, “Book banning is real, it’s happening everywhere, it’s happening in California.” She emphasized the importance of discussing these issues openly. Joanna Ho added, “Caroline was like this is completely out of our integrity; we won’t be changing our presentation if we’re giving the presentation.”

Despite the district’s request, which they stated was made to protect younger students, the authors chose to leave rather than alter their message. The district justified its stance by saying that the focus on book banning overshadowed their book’s positive themes of kindness and empathy.

The San Ramon Valley Unified School District clarified that they reached out to the organization coordinating the event to adjust the presentation for younger audiences but received no response. Their final request was made directly to the authors upon arrival at the school, leading to the authors’ exit.

Kusin-Pritchard highlighted the positive feedback they have received from thousands of students nationwide, noting that children resonate powerfully with the book’s messages. She remarked, “We have seen hopeful reactions from children when engaging with the book’s story.”

Joanna Ho also stressed the significance of addressing why books can be banned, including uncomfortable historical truths, race, and diverse family structures. “Bringing such stories to light is crucial for increasing awareness and intentionality in our communities,” she stated.

This incident underscores a growing tension between advocacy for free speech and concerns about age-appropriate content in educational settings. As debates over book banning continue to unfold across the nation, the authors’ experience highlights the urgent need for open dialogue about literature and its role in fostering understanding among young readers.
