The iconic image, taken in 1973 at Travis Air Force Base, shows Stirm being embraced by his family after enduring nearly 1,966 days as a prisoner of war in North Vietnam. His daughter, Lorrie Stirm Kitching, confirmed the news, sharing that the photograph titled “Burst of Joy” hangs prominently in her home, serving as a lasting reminder of their family’s reunion.
“It was truly a very moving reunion for our family,” said Kitching, reflecting on that fateful St. Patrick’s Day moment when she ran to hug her father. “Just the feelings of that and the intensity of the feeling will never leave me.”
Stirm, a decorated pilot, was shot down on October 27, 1967, during a bombing mission over North Vietnam. He was captured immediately after parachuting from his damaged F-105 Thunderbird and spent years in brutal captivity, including time at the infamous Hanoi Hilton, where he endured torture and isolation.
“John McCain tapped in this joke. First time Dad laughed in jail,” Kitching recalled about her father’s bond with the late senator, who was also a POW.
The emotional weight of the iconic photograph contrasts sharply with the heartache Stirm faced upon his return. Shortly after his release, he received a “Dear John” letter from his wife, Loretta, which marked the beginning of a painful chapter in his life. The couple divorced within a year of his return, a situation Stirm described as unwelcomed notoriety.
Stirm retired from the Air Force in 1977 after 25 years of service and later worked in the family business, Ferry Steel Products. His legacy, however, remains etched in the hearts of many who recognize him as a symbol of resilience and the human spirit’s triumph over adversity.
