Chester Bowl Ski Season Officially Opens with Free Lessons

URGENT UPDATE: The ski and snowboard season at Chester Bowl in Duluth is officially underway, having opened on December 14. As winter fun kicks off, local residents are flocking to the slopes for free ski and snowboarding lessons during the holiday break, with lessons available from December 26 to 30.

The park, spanning 117 acres, began snowmaking on November 26 and is witnessing a surge in visitors. Executive Director Dave Schaeffer reported high energy and participation, stating, “This week is the busiest week at Chester Bowl,” with an estimated 150 people engaging in lessons on peak days.

The complimentary group lessons cater to beginners, covering essential skills. Level one focuses on basic techniques, while level two introduces participants to using the chair lift effectively. As of early Friday afternoon, around 20 skiers and 10 snowboarders were in level one, guided by parents and instructors, while level two had 15 skiers and 10 snowboarders honing their skills.

Participants often experience initial nervousness, but Schaeffer reassures, “Their first two or three times down the hill, they’re not as nervous anymore.” This progression is crucial as consistent practice can lead to significant improvements throughout the week.

Looking ahead, Chester Bowl is set to offer small-group lessons on Saturdays and Sundays in January, as well as on February 7. Notably, pass holders from partnered locations such as Spirit Mountain must purchase a Chester day pass to engage in lessons. Schaeffer indicates that about 30% of level one and two participants advance to level three, where they will tackle more challenging terrain and freestyle tricks.

With operational hours from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. daily through January 4, and extended hours on Monday, Thursday, and Friday evenings until 8:30 p.m., Chester Bowl is poised to become a local favorite for winter sports enthusiasts. The park is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Chester Bowl also offers season-long equipment rentals, and its 175-foot Alpine Hill can accommodate up to 960 skiers and snowboarders per hour. The park typically serves between 1,800 and 2,000 season pass holders each year, drawing primarily from the local community.

As a nonprofit supported by the city of Duluth Parks Department, Chester Bowl is committed to enhancing the local experience. The “Growing Up Chester” Capital Campaign aims to raise over $3 million to renovate and expand the Thom Storm Chalet, with plans to complete the project by 2026.
