UPDATE: In a thrilling showdown, the Evans boys basketball team has just claimed victory in the Metro Conference West tournament final, defeating Windermere 47-44 in overtime on February 10, 2023. This win marks their second overtime victory in just two nights, solidifying their status as a top contender for the state title.
Evans, now boasting a record of 14-4, made a remarkable comeback from a 10-point deficit to secure the win at home. The Trojans’ defense and resilience in high-pressure situations have been key to their success this season, especially after graduating their top four scorers.
The decisive moment came when senior guard Johnny Wright banked in a clutch shot, tying the game at 40-40 and forcing the overtime period. Junior guard Abimael Belleus dominated the overtime, scoring six of Evans’ seven points, including a pivotal spinning scoop shot that gave the Trojans a 45-42 lead. Belleus finished the game with 14 points, showcasing his ability to perform in clutch situations.
“
We needed it. We gotta keep stacking up wins,”
Belleus stated after the game.
Evans coach Lonza Morgan credited the team’s defensive efforts, saying, “We were lethargic in the first half. Once defense started creating offense, we got going.” The Trojans are currently ranked No. 4 in the FHSAA 6A rankings, trailing only defending champion St. Thomas Aquinas.
In the Metro East final, host Oak Ridge emerged victorious over Winter Park with a commanding 60-38 win, further highlighting the strength of the local basketball scene.
Windermere, now 9-9, faced significant challenges, playing without senior point guard Lucas Boyd, who suffered a wrist fracture in a previous game. Despite a valiant effort from senior Ben Bunnell, who scored a game-high 16 points, Windermere fell short in the final moments, missing their last three shots.
Both teams are set to continue their competitive schedules, with Windermere facing Windermere Prep on Tuesday, while Evans will host Lake Brantley on the same day.
As the basketball season progresses, all eyes will remain on Evans and Oak Ridge as they continue to battle for supremacy in the Metro Conference. Stay tuned for more updates on their journey toward the state championships.
