UPDATE: Air Force Lt. Col. Dane Coppini, a native of Ferndale, California, is set to take part in an exhilarating flyover during the Kansas City Chiefs versus Indianapolis Colts NFL game this Sunday at 10 a.m. in Kansas City. This thrilling event will feature four jets soaring above the stadium as part of the NFL’s Military Appreciation Month celebrations.
Coppini, with over 15 years of flying experience, is assigned to the 87th Flying Training Squadron, known as the “Red Bulls.” He typically operates out of Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas, which is renowned as the top pilot-producing base in the U.S. Air Force. “It’s an honor to be selected for such a significant event,” Coppini stated, expressing pride in representing his hometown.
Typically, the squadron requests a few flyovers each year, and this will be Coppini’s first opportunity to showcase his skills in a live event. The aircraft involved, the T-38C Talon, is the primary training jet for Air Force pilots, utilized to prepare them for advanced flying missions.
Coppini has an inspiring military background. He enlisted 19 years ago and initially served in security forces. After a pivotal deployment, he pursued flight training and has since completed 10 deployments, including missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, and various locations across Africa.
Reflecting on his roots, Coppini shared, “The support from family and friends back home has been incredible. Growing up in a small town, you don’t realize how special it is until you leave.” His mother, Carrie Coppini, expressed her pride, saying, “We’re super proud of him, and he’s a ‘high flier!’” She added that the family is excited to watch the flyover live.
As a Lieutenant Colonel and director of operations at Laughlin, Coppini enjoys the unique opportunity to fly regularly, saying, “It’s an amazing experience, a blessing, and an honor.” His passion for flying and commitment to training the next generation of pilots continues to motivate him as he approaches a potential command position by next summer.
This flyover not only honors military service but also highlights the personal journey of a hometown hero. As the game approaches, fans and family alike eagerly anticipate this memorable moment in the skies above Kansas City.
Stay tuned for updates as the game unfolds and celebrate the contributions of those serving in the military. Don’t miss this spectacular display of honor and heritage on Sunday!
