Franklin G. Schappell, 91, Passes Away; Funeral Services Announced

UPDATE: Franklin G. Schappell, a beloved member of the Perry Township community, has passed away at the age of 91 on December 19, 2025. His family mourns the loss of a devoted father and veteran, while preparations for his funeral services are underway.

Schappell, who was married to the late Ruth G. (Reppert) Schappell, who died on July 31, 2019, leaves behind a legacy of love and dedication. He was born in Perry Township to the late James and Edna (Sunday) Schappell and graduated from Perry High School in 1952.

As a proud U.S. Army veteran, Franklin served his country and later contributed to the community by working at Berks Packing, where he operated a chopper and helped produce famous Berks Hot Dogs until his retirement in 1996. Known for his passions in hunting, farming, and gardening, he was also a dedicated member of Zion’s Church in Perry Township and took pride in assisting with maintenance at Zion’s Cemetery.

Franklin Schappell is survived by three sons—Rodney F. Schappell of Cumru Township, Dennis J. Schappell (husband of Lisa Simmons) of Centre Township, and Gregory C. Schappell (husband of Tulsa Hosmer) of Shoemakersville. He also leaves behind three daughters: Denise E. Schappell of Perry Township, Brenda R. (Schappell) Zellers of Hamburg, and Patti E. (Schappell) Cahill (wife of Dale Cahill) of Geneva, OH. The family is comforted by the presence of 12 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

In addition to his immediate family, Franklin was predeceased by his twin daughters—Lori L. and Dori A. Schappell—as well as a sister, Dorothy (Schappell) Bankes, and a niece.

Funeral services for Franklin G. Schappell will take place on Tuesday, December 16, 2025, at 11:00 am from Zion’s Church, located at 770 Zion Church Road, Hamburg, PA 19526. A viewing will be held at the church from 10:00 am to 11:00 am, allowing friends and family to pay their respects before the service. Burial will follow in Zion’s Cemetery, Perry Township.
