Gas Prices Surge to $3.89 in Durango Amid Iran Conflict

UPDATE: Gas prices in Durango have surged dramatically, with many stations now charging over $3.40 per gallon, a stark jump from approximately $2.80 just weeks ago. As of July 15, 2023, a Circle K on Main Avenue reported unleaded gas prices hitting $3.89 and diesel soaring to $4.99. This spike is tied to ongoing conflict with Iran, which has severely disrupted oil shipments through the vital Strait of Hormuz, a key global oil shipping route.

Residents and local employees are already feeling the impact. Nikki Sellers and Heather Gibson, employees at the Marathon gas station near Durango High School, reported a sharp increase in customers stockpiling fuel. “It’s probably gone from someone filling a gas can once a week to four times a week,” Sellers stated. The Marathon station has seen prices rise by about $1 in just a week, climbing from $2.60 to $3.59 per gallon.

The rising costs are causing distress for many, particularly retirees and individuals with disabilities who may struggle to afford these increases. “We get yelled at constantly because our gas prices keep going up,” Gibson said. “Customers will ask, ‘Why are you guys $1 more than you were last week?’ We know why, but we can’t say anything.”

Despite the frustration, some residents are adapting. One local man mentioned he will ride his bike to work more frequently as a way to mitigate the financial burden. Others, like 17-year-old Hatch Miller, shared their own challenges, noting that filling up his truck has escalated from $40 to nearly $60.

While some locals express concern, others remain hopeful. Melanie, a driver at the Circle K, stated, “Wars are always going to happen, and our prices are going to go up and down… I try to remind myself it’s just a season, and we’ll get through this.” However, she acknowledged that prices will likely continue to rise for as long as the conflict persists.

As the situation in Iran evolves, it is anticipated that gas prices across the country will remain elevated, further affecting daily life for many Americans. “There’s a point where it’s enough. We have to live our lives,” Melanie added. “Be aware, be conscious. But you can’t let it consume you.”

Residents are advised to keep a close eye on gas prices as the situation develops. The immediate future of fuel costs remains uncertain amid these turbulent global events, with many questioning when relief might come.
