URGENT UPDATE: Two Gen X couples are making headlines as they transition to vibrant community living in Sleepy Hollow, New York. The Falks and Coopermans are embracing the trend of “rightsizing” as they seek accessible homes in a bustling, mixed-use development called Edge-on-Hudson.
As empty nesters, both couples—Stephanie and Andrew Falk, and Judy and Steven Cooperman—have decided to leave their suburban roots behind for a more urban lifestyle. The Falks sold their 100-year-old house in Edgemont, New York, aiming for a community that offers easy access to restaurants, parks, and the scenic Hudson River. This shift comes as their three children have moved away for college, prompting a desire for a new living environment.
Around spring 2024, during a golf outing, the Falks learned that the Coopermans were also looking to sell their family home. They discovered Edge-on-Hudson, a partially constructed development that promises to fulfill their shared need for a walkable, socially engaging environment. With townhomes starting at $1.6 million, the couples believe they can maintain their quality of life while downsizing appropriately.
Both couples are excited about their new homes, which will include amenities like a park and a pool—ideal for fostering neighborly connections. Stephanie Falk emphasizes the importance of community, stating,
“I just believe fully in community…being stimulated and being around other like-minded people can be really beneficial.”
The Edge-on-Hudson project will eventually house nearly 1,200 townhomes, condos, and apartments on a site formerly occupied by a GM assembly plant. As construction progresses, the Falks and Coopermans have already moved into rental apartments within the complex, eager to enjoy their new community while waiting for their homes to be completed.
Both couples have sold or donated much of their furniture, marking a fresh start in this evolving lifestyle. “It’s very easy to just say, ‘Hey, you want to go out for a walk?’” Judy Cooperman noted, highlighting the ease of building new friendships in this friendly environment.
As more Gen Xers and baby boomers seek similar transitions, the Falks and Coopermans exemplify a growing trend of individuals who desire a vibrant community without sacrificing their living space. This shift represents a significant change in the housing landscape, especially in a market where accessibility and community engagement are valued more than ever.
