UPDATE: On December 13, 2025, Gethsemane Cemetery in Muhlenberg Township became a poignant gathering place as over 100 volunteers united to honor veterans during the annual Wreaths Across America event. This year, the cemetery laid 1,300 wreaths at the graves of military personnel, a heartfelt tribute that reflects deep gratitude and respect for those who served.
The ceremony drew local residents like Christopher and Leeann DeFusco, who made the hour-long journey from East Nantmeal Township to honor Leeann’s parents, Joseph and Marie Geigus, both of whom passed away a year ago. Leeann placed a green pine wreath with a red bow at her father’s grave, a simple act that carried profound emotional weight.
“We wanted to remember our family while also honoring all veterans,” Leeann remarked, her voice filled with emotion. The couple’s commitment extends beyond personal remembrance; they contributed financially to ensure other veterans received wreaths as well.
The Wreaths Across America initiative, founded in 1992 by Morrill Worcester, engages over 2 million volunteers across the nation, with this year’s effort involving more than 5,200 locations globally. The mission is clear: to remember, honor, and teach about the sacrifices made by veterans.
Jackie Grauert, assistant director at Gethsemane Cemetery, emphasized the importance of this event. “We just want to give back to our veterans; they have done so much for us,” she stated, highlighting the community’s commitment to honoring those who served.
As the ceremony commenced, the atmosphere was filled with reverence, and attendees were visibly moved by the outpouring of support for veterans. “It makes me feel good that our veterans are being remembered,” Leeann said. Christopher added, “The fact that people are taking time out of their busy schedules to do this shows their appreciation for our veterans.”
In addition to the wreath-laying, the event featured a rendition of “Taps,” played by Randall Mutter with the Buccaneers Alumni, enhancing the solemnity of the occasion. The DeFuscos and other attendees reflected on the significance of gathering during the holidays, a time typically reserved for family and celebrations, to dedicate their time to those who have sacrificed for their country.
Gethsemane Cemetery continues to play a pivotal role in Wreaths Across America, demonstrating that honoring veterans transcends personal loss. “It definitely warms all of our hearts,” Grauert concluded, indicating the cemetery’s commitment to this noble cause.
As this year’s event wraps up, communities are encouraged to reflect on the sacrifices of veterans and consider participating in next year’s observance. The mission remains vital, reminding us all of the importance of remembrance and respect for those who have served in the military.
