Google Launches Long-Awaited Option to Change Gmail Addresses

UPDATE: Google has just announced a major update allowing users to change their Gmail addresses ending with @gmail.com. This long-awaited feature is rolling out now, just in time for the new year, enabling users to finally shed embarrassing old email addresses.

In a recent update to its help center, Google confirmed that users worldwide will soon have the option to change their Gmail addresses while keeping the familiar @gmail.com domain. This information was first highlighted by observant users in the “Google Pixel Hub” Telegram group, who discovered the changes on the Hindi-language version of the help page.

The new guidelines state, “If your Google Account email address ends in @gmail.com, you may be able to change it to another address that ends in @gmail.com.” This feature is expected to be gradually available globally, although the English version of the help page has yet to reflect the updates.

Currently, the English version still states, “If your account’s email address ends in @gmail.com, you usually can’t change it.” However, other language versions, including Spanish, French, and Japanese, now include the new rules. Google has not provided a timeline for when the English version will be updated.

This significant change allows users who have outgrown their original addresses or wish for a fresh start to switch without losing any important data. Google reassures users that once they update their email address, the old one will be converted to an alternate email address. Users will continue to receive emails sent to both their old and new addresses and can use either one to access popular Google services like Maps, YouTube, and Drive.

However, there are some limitations to keep in mind. Once users change their address, they will be locked out from creating a new Gmail address for the same account for a full 12 months.

To check eligibility for this feature, users in regions with the updated help page can visit myaccount.google.com/google-account-email. From there, they should click on “Personal information” and then “Email.” If the option to change the email address is available, a button labeled “Change Google Account email” will appear.

This update is set to transform how users manage their Gmail accounts, offering a much-needed option for personalization and privacy. With the digital age demanding unique and professional identities, this feature could significantly impact how users communicate and connect online.

Stay tuned for more updates as Google continues to roll out this feature.
