Hermantown’s Gabe Swenson Scores Late to Seal 4-2 Victory

UPDATE: In a thrilling finish, Hermantown junior Gabe Swenson scored a crucial late goal to secure a 4-2 victory against Cloquet-Esko-Carlton (CEC) at the Northwoods Federal Credit Union Arena on December 19, 2023. With just under six minutes left in a tied game, Swenson took matters into his own hands, launching a shot that clinched the win for his team.

“I figured I would try to get to the middle and rip a shot — see what happens — and it went in,” Swenson said after the game. His decisive goal turned the tide for Hermantown, who now boasts an undefeated record of 8-0-2 and is ranked No. 1 in Class A.

The game began with CEC dominating the ice, outshooting Hermantown 13-5 in the first period. CEC’s performance could have easily resulted in an early lead if not for Hermantown’s standout goalie, Bryce Francisco, who made an impressive 28 saves. “We weren’t our best at times tonight, but Bryce was up to the task,” said Hermantown coach Pat Andrews. “We don’t win that game — obviously — without Bryce.”

Despite a shaky start, Hermantown rebounded in the second period. Paxson Madill scored the first goal for Hermantown at 9:45 into the period, but CEC responded with a power play goal by Luca Genilini just before the end of the second, keeping the game tight at 2-1.

CEC’s coach, Shea Walters, praised his team’s resilience. “We started a little flat in the second period, but then again — we had a great response.” The Lumberjacks showed their own defensive prowess, maintaining a perfect penalty kill throughout the game.

As the final period unfolded, Swenson’s late goal changed the momentum entirely. The Hawks’ final score was sealed with an empty-net goal from Kole Lendzyk, bringing the score to 4-2.

Looking ahead, Hermantown is set to face Delano on December 22 at 3 p.m., a matchup against the No. 3 team in Class A, and White Bear Lake, a top 20 Class AA team, right after the Christmas break.

“It’s crazy to think that we haven’t lost yet,” Francisco remarked. “We’re having a great year, but we’re not really too focused on staying undefeated. Our coaches are stressing taking it one game at a time and not get too caught up in worrying about rankings.”

This victory not only bolsters Hermantown’s momentum but also sets the stage for a high-stakes showdown against Delano. Fans are eager to see if the Hawks can continue their impressive streak.
