UPDATE: Hilary Duff has expressed her deep sorrow following the tragic death of her on-screen father, Robert Carradine, who passed away at the age of 71 on February 23, 2023. Carradine’s family confirmed the news, revealing he battled bipolar disorder for almost two decades.
In a heartfelt Instagram post earlier today, Duff wrote, “This one hurts. It’s really hard to face this reality about an old friend.” She shared cherished throwback photos, stating, “There was so much warmth in the McGuire family, and I always felt so cared for by my on-screen parents. I’m deeply sad to learn Bobby was suffering. My heart aches for him, his family, and everyone who loved him. 💔”
The Carradine family released a poignant statement through Deadline, emphasizing their loss: “In a world that can feel so dark, Bobby was always a beacon of light to everyone around him.” They acknowledged his struggles with mental illness and urged for greater awareness and compassion surrounding bipolar disorder.
Keith Carradine, Robert’s brother and fellow actor, also addressed the challenges Robert faced. He stated, “We want people to know it, and there is no shame in it. It is an illness that got the best of him… He was profoundly gifted, and we will miss him every day.”
Carradine was best known for his role as Sam McGuire in the iconic Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire, which aired from 2001 to 2004. He reprised his role in The Lizzie McGuire Movie in 2003 and was set to return for a reboot that was unfortunately scrapped in 2020.
He leaves behind three children, including Ever Carradine, who is also an actress, along with his extended family. Former co-star Jake Thomas, who played Lizzie’s brother, reflected on their bond, stating, “They have always been and will continue to be like an aunt and uncle to me. They’re basically like family at this point.”
As fans mourn the loss of this beloved actor, his family is asking for privacy during this difficult time. The message is clear: Carradine’s legacy will continue to inspire conversations about mental health and the importance of understanding those who struggle.
