Honolulu Airport Begins Nightly Runway Closures for Upgrades

UPDATE: Starting tomorrow, December 20, 2024, the Daniel K. Inouye International Airport in Honolulu will implement nightly closures of Runway 4R from 8 p.m. to 3:30 a.m. This urgent maintenance is part of the ongoing HNL Runway and Taxiway Shoulder Rehabilitation project, as confirmed by the Hawai’i Department of Transportation (HDOT).

Travelers heading to Honolulu will need to adjust their schedules as these closures are designed to minimize disruption to regular flight operations. Late-night arrivals will be rerouted to Runway 8L or the Reef Runway, leading to potential increases in aircraft noise over the ‘Ewa Plain, shifting the nighttime soundscape from serenity to the roar of jet engines.

The upgrades are crucial for maintaining the safety and efficiency of Hawaiʻi’s busiest airport. Initially set to be completed by October 2024, the project faced delays due to unpredictable weather conditions. HDOT is committed to ensuring that these essential improvements are conducted with minimal inconvenience to the community.

In a statement, HDOT expressed gratitude towards the public for their patience during this time:

“HDOT appreciates the community’s patience and understanding while the needed work is conducted to ensure safe operations at HNL.”

Residents near the airport should prepare for increased noise levels as the department finalizes the project. Scheduled to last until December 20, these nightly upgrades are part of HDOT’s broader strategy to enhance the infrastructure and safety of Hawaiʻi’s airports.

Stay tuned for more updates as the situation develops. Travelers are encouraged to check flight statuses and plan accordingly during this period of essential maintenance.
