Fred Grant, who opened the restaurant in August 2021, has transformed the dining landscape while breathing new life into historic venues like the Temple Theatre.
Stepping into Market Pizza is an immersive experience; the warm, savory aroma of melting cheese and tangy barbecue sauce invites visitors into a cozy environment filled with friendly chatter. Jamie Cianci, the general manager, notes a personal touch: “I know our regulars by heart,” she said, emphasizing the restaurant’s community spirit.
Grant’s vision was born from a nostalgic discussion about his favorite childhood pizzas in Houlton. The COVID-19 pandemic prompted him to take action: “We realized no one was going to come save us and open a pizza place,” he explained. With the right space now available, he brought his dreams to life.
The key to Market Pizza’s success lies in its commitment to quality. With simple ingredients and no fillers in the cheese, customers can expect a consistently delicious product. Eleven dedicated employees serve up a variety of pizzas, with the garlic mashed potato pizza emerging as a crowd favorite.
Across the street, the Temple Theatre, the oldest continuously operated theater in Maine, is undergoing a significant transformation. Grant acquired the venue in June 2023 and has since upgraded its projection and sound systems while expanding the concession area. “We envision the theater as a multi-use gathering space,” said venue manager Jason Howe, who hinted at plans for live performances and themed game nights.
Both Market Pizza and the Temple Theatre share a vision of community engagement, reflecting Houlton’s rich history while creating new memories for families. “There are people in this town who remember seeing a John Wayne movie at our theater,” Howe said. “Now they’re bringing their children to experience the same.”
