BREAKING NEWS: James Donald “Jim” Early, age 87, has passed away peacefully on December 18, 2025, leaving a profound impact on the Waterford community. Known for his dedication to education, volunteerism, and music, Jim’s legacy endures through his family and friends.
Born on July 3 in Albany, New York, Jim always celebrated his birthday with fireworks and joy. He was the third of five children in the family of the late Joseph A. Early, Esq. and Loretto Powers Early. He is survived by his loving sister, Elizabeth M. Early, along with numerous nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews.
Jim was married to Helen K. Clark in June 1967, with whom he had five daughters. Tragically, their daughter Mary Ellen Early passed away just six months ago on June 26, 2025. Jim is survived by daughters Grace E. Boss (Mark), Jane F. Early, Margaret H. Warner, and Kathleen L. Early, along with nine cherished grandchildren.
Jim’s life was marked by service and community engagement. He served as a guidance counselor at St. Mary’s Academy in Glens Falls and taught English Composition at Hudson Valley Community College until his retirement in December 1999. Following his retirement, he became the Sole Assessor for the Town and Village of Waterford, a role he fulfilled with integrity for ten years.
For over 57 years, Jim was an active member of the J. W. Ford Hose Volunteer Fire Department, embodying the spirit of service. He also shared his passion for music as an organist at Saint Joseph’s Parish in South Troy and was involved with the Knights of Columbus and the Waterford Lions Club.
“Jim’s legacy of kindness, friendship, service, and faith will be remembered by all who knew him,” a family spokesperson reflected.
Jim spent his final years at the Eddy Heritage House Nursing Home & Rehabilitation Center, where he received loving care. His funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. from the Philip J. Brendese Funeral Home, followed by a mass at noon at St. Mary of the Assumption Church in Waterford. Interment will take place at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Family and friends are invited to visit the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. to pay their respects. The Early family requests that contributions in Jim’s memory be made to the Hospice Community or the Waterford Fire Department.
As the community mourns the loss of a devoted father, grandfather, and friend, Jim’s contributions to education and service will continue to resonate with those whose lives he touched.
