Junkyard Brewing Launches Unique Lefse Beer Just in Time for Holidays

BREAKING NEWS: In an exciting collaboration, Junkyard Brewing in Moorhead has just announced the launch of a unique lefse-based beer, the Lefse Pilsner, developed in partnership with Freddy’s Lefse in West Fargo. This innovative brew, featuring potato-infused flavors, is set to hit taps just in time for the holiday season, sparking curiosity among beer enthusiasts.

The Lefse Pilsner has already garnered rave reviews during its initial rollout party held recently at Junkyard. Owner Aaron Juhnke revealed that some attendees were convinced they could taste the authentic flavors of lefse in the beer. “I’ve talked to some people who are 100 percent certain they can taste lefse in this beer,” Juhnke stated, highlighting the drink’s potential to surprise even the most discerning palates.

Attendees included Katie and Bryan Nermoe, the owners of Freddy’s Lefse, who actively participated in the special event. While Katie prepared complimentary lefse samples for guests, Bryan mingled with patrons, sharing his initial skepticism about the idea. “It was hard to imagine a lefse beer, to be honest,” he admitted, yet praised the final product after tasting it. “I thought it was really good. That’s a testament to Junkyard and their capabilities,” he added.

Juhnke emphasized that creating a lefse-based beer was a novel endeavor, yet feasible. “The brewing process is just a process of converting starches to sugar, so potato starch should convert like other types of starches, like rice or corn,” he explained. The brew incorporates actual lefse and other ingredients used by Freddy’s, ensuring authenticity and flavor.

Event coordinator Lexi Ostenaa confirmed that the brewery effectively utilized social media and email outreach to inform regular customers about the exclusive pop-up event. One satisfied customer, Kelly Klocke from Fargo, declared the Lefse Pilsner a winner, adding, “We actually bought a package of lefse, also. We’ll keep that for Thanksgiving.”

Juhnke is enthusiastic about the beer’s design as well, noting that the can graphics feature a Scandinavian vibe with a playful image of elves holding beer steins. “It doesn’t hurt that Moorhead High School’s athletic mascot is a spud,” he quipped.

The new Lefse Pilsner will be available on tap at Junkyard Brewing locations in both Moorhead and West Fargo. Additionally, cans of the unique brew will be distributed to local businesses and liquor stores, including those in the Twin Cities. This exciting launch not only showcases an innovative product but also highlights the collaborative spirit of local businesses just ahead of the holiday season.
