Kapa‘a Faces Traffic Disruptions from December 15-17

URGENT UPDATE: Kapa‘a residents must prepare for significant traffic disruptions from December 15 to December 17 as road and lane closures are set to commence. The Kauai County Department of Public Works has announced that critical geotechnical subsurface exploration will take place to facilitate future traffic signal enhancements and the installation of a new utility pole.

The closures will begin on December 15 with a single-lane closure on Kukui Street, specifically affecting the left turn lane just west of the Kūhiō Highway intersection. On December 16, a complete closure of the east side of Kukui Street at the same junction will occur. The disruption will wrap up on December 17 with the closure of the south end of Niu Street, also adjacent to Kūhiō Highway. All closures will take place between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m., weather permitting.

Officials emphasize that while these necessary interruptions are expected to cause temporary inconveniences, access to properties along the affected routes will remain open to residents and business owners. The county urges commuters to heed all posted signage and instructions from flaggers.

“Access to properties will be provided. Please observe and obey all traffic controls, posted signs, and flaggers,”

stated authorities on the county’s official website.

Residents are advised to plan for increased travel time and prepare for detours and potential delays due to the lane and road closures. The impact on daily commutes could be significant, and officials recommend seeking alternative routes during this period.
